Lamya is a feminine given name of Arabic origin, derived from the poetic Arabic word لمى (lamā), meaning "dark red lips". This evocative term is often used in classical Arabic poetry to describe a beloved's lips as dark, reddening, and moist, a beauty ideal celebrated in pre-Islamic and Islamic verse.

The root L-M-Y (ل-م-ي) in Arabic conveys notions of darkness, richness, or intensity, particularly in reference to lips. The word lamā is distinct from laylā (night), though both share a connection to deep color. This lends the name Lamya a sensuous, romantic quality deeply embedded in Arabic literary tradition.

Notable Bearers

Lamya's most internationally recognized bearer is Lamya Al-Mugheiry (30 October 1963 – 8 January 2009), better known mononymously as Lamya. Born in Mombasa, Kenya, to Omani parents, she rose to fame in the early 1990s as an original member of the British soul collective Soul II Soul. Later in her career, she toured as a backing vocalist for Duran Duran before releasing her debut solo album Learning from Falling (2002). The album produced the dance hit "Empires (Bring Me Men)" and showcased her falsetto range. She was preparing a second album, Hiding in Plain Sight, at the time of her sudden death from a heart attack on 8 January 2009.
