Kresimir

Kresimir is an earlier form of the Croatian name Krešimir, derived from the Slavic elements krěsiti 'to spark, to flare up, to bring to life, to resurrect' and mirŭ 'peace, world'. The name thus connotes something like 'one who resurrects peace' or 'bringer of peaceful life'. It was borne by several medieval Croatian kings, whose names were recorded in Latin as Cresimirus.

Medieval Croatian Kings

Four kings of Croatia bore the name Krešimir (in its later form) during the 10th and 11th centuries. Krešimir I reigned from 935 to 945. Michael Krešimir II ruled from 949 to 969. Krešimir III was king from 1000 to 1030, and Peter Krešimir IV, the last of the line, ruled from 1059 until his death in 1075. These rulers were members of the House of Trpimirović, and Krešimir III founded its cadet branch, the House of Krešimirović. Their reigns marked periods of expansion and consolidation for the early Croatian kingdom.

Usage and Variants

In modern times, the standard Croatian form is Krešimír. Diminutives include Krešo. The Polish cognate is Krzesimir. Kresimir is primarily a historical variant, reflecting an earlier spelling before the addition of the diacritical mark.
