Meaning & History
Kóri is an Old Norse masculine name of uncertain etymology, recorded primarily in medieval Norse sources. Though its precise meaning is unknown, it may be related to the Old Norse kóri meaning "vulture" or "carrion bird", or alternatively derived from Kári, a wind deity in Norse mythology known from the Poetic Edda. The name appears in Landnámabók, the Icelandic Book of Settlements, and is borne by a few early Icelandic settlers. No notable historical figures of wide renown bear the name, but its occurrence in sagas and place names suggests it was in limited use among the Norse in Iceland and Scandinavia. Related forms include the feminine Kóra and the diminutive Kórina. The name largely fell out of use after the medieval period, though it is occasionally revived in Iceland as a unique traditional name.
