Meaning & History

Klaes is a Frisian short form of Nicholas. The name Nicholas originates from the Greek name Nikolaos, meaning "victory of the people," derived from Greek elements nike ("victory") and laos ("people"). Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century bishop of Myra in Anatolia, is a central Christian figure known for his generosity, giving rise to the figure of Santa Claus. Due to his widespread veneration, Nicholas and its short forms like Klaes have been used across many cultures.

In the Frisian context — spoken in parts of the Netherlands and Germany — Klaes is a common diminutive reflecting the region's linguistic tradition. The name has also spread as a surname and given name in other Germanic areas.

Notable bearers include Klaes Karppinen (1907–1992), a Finnish cross-country skier; Lara Klaes (born 1997), a German politician; and Ulrich Klaes (born 1946), a German field hockey player. In fiction, Klaes Ashford is a character in The Expanse TV series.

Klaes is also akin to other short forms found in Germanic languages, such as Claus and Klaus, all deriving from the same root. These variants appear throughout northern Europe as given names and surnames.
