Kaur is a given name widely used by Sikh and some Hindu women in the Punjab region. It is derived ultimately from Sanskrit kumārī (कुमारी), meaning "girl" or "daughter of a king," and thus conveys the meaning of "princess." Linguistically, the word underwent a transformation from Kumari to Kuar and then, through metathesis, became Kaur. While some sources associate it with the Rajput title Kanwar or Kunwar (meaning "prince" or "bachelor"), the name took on a distinct spiritual significance within Sikhism.

The formal adoption of Kaur as a mandatory surname for all female Sikhs occurred in 1699 during the founding of the Khalsa initiated by Guru Gobind Singh. Simultaneously, male Sikhs were required to take the name Singh, meaning "lion." Over time, Kaur has evolved into both a surname and a compulsory middle name for Sikh women, serving as a badge of faith and equality.
