Meaning & History
Juurou is an alternate transcription of the Japanese kanji 十郎, referring to the name Jūrō. The name literally combines the elements ju (十, ten) and rō (郎, son), traditionally denoting the tenth son in a family. This naming convention follows a common pattern in historic Japan where sons were often named by birth order using numbers combined with a suffix like rō (son) or suke (assistant). Other kanji combinations for the same readings can be chosen, expanding the variety of possible meanings.
The name Jūrō gained some recognition in pop culture through the samurai film series Zatoichi, where the protagonist, a blind masseur and swordsman, was named Zatoichi and often referred to as Ichi, while supporting characters included a samurai named Jūrō. More notably, the Japanese general Tokugawa Ieyasu had a son named Tokugawa Jūrō, though his given rank may not correspond to his factual birth order.
