Meaning & History
Jurijs is the Latvian form of the Slavic Yuriy, itself a variant of George. The name derives from the Greek Georgios, meaning "farmer" or "earthworker," from the elements ge (earth) and ergon (work).
Jurijs entered the Latvian onomasticon through Russian influence, first recorded as a given name in 1771 according to the Wikt. It remains especially popular among Latvia’s Russian-speaking minority: as of 2010, 14,315 persons in Latvia bore Jurijs as their only given name.
While Jurijs is distinct from the native Latvian variant Juris, both ultimately trace back to the same root. The name’s most iconic bearers belong to its Russian form: Yuriy Dolgorukiy, the 12th-century grand prince of Kyiv, and cosmonaut Yuriy Gagarin, the first human in space.
