Meaning & History

Jordán is the Spanish form of Jordan, derived from the name of the river that flows between Jordan and Israel. The river's Hebrew name Yardēn comes from the root yarad meaning "descend, flow down." In the New Testament, John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, which gave the name deep Christian significance. Crusaders returning from the Holy Land brought water from the river to baptize their children, helping establish Jordan as a personal name across Europe.

The name declined after the Middle Ages but was revived in the 19th century, with the Spanish form Jordán becoming used in Spanish-speaking countries. While less common than its English counterpart, it follows the typical adaptation of names from other languages into Spanish orthography. The feminine form Jordana is also used in Spanish. Cognate masculine forms include Catalan Jordà, Bulgarian Iordan and Yordan, while the Latin root Jordanes is a possible distant influence via the 6th-century Gothic historian of that name.

Notable bearers with the Jordán surname include Spanish athletes and artists; the best-known Jordán in media is perhaps the basketball player Michael Jordan, though his surname bears the English spelling. The name continues to be used today primarily in Spain and Latin America.
