Jerred is an English variant of Jared, a name with deep biblical roots. The name Jared derives from the Hebrew Yareḏ or Yereḏ, meaning "descent". In the Old Testament, Jared is a patriarch mentioned in Genesis 5:15–20 as the father of Enoch and a descendant of Seth. According to the biblical genealogy, Jared lived to the age of 962 years, one of the longest lifespans recorded. The name has been used as an English given name since the Protestant Reformation, when biblical names became more common among English speakers. It gained significant modern popularity through the character Jarrod Barkley on the television series The Big Valley (1965–1969), which led to increased usage of similar spellings, including Jerred.
