Jeffery is a variant of Jeffrey, ultimately derived from the medieval English form of the Norman French name Geoffrey. The root, Geoffrey, originates from a Frankish name composed of elements such as *gautaz meaning "Geat" (a North Germanic tribe), *gawi meaning "territory", or *walah meaning "foreigner", combined with *fridu meaning "peace". It is also possible that multiple distinct names coalesced into Geoffrey, and in the later Middle Ages it became conflated with the name Godfrey.
