Meaning & History
Etymology and Origins
Jafet is the Spanish form of Japheth, a biblical name derived from the Hebrew Yefeṯ, meaning “enlarged” or “may He extend.” The name comes from the root nuaḥ, associated with rest or repose. In the Hebrew Bible, Japheth is one of the three sons of Noah, along with Shem and Ham.
Biblical and Historical Context
According to the Book of Genesis, Japheth played a role in the story of Noah’s drunkenness and the cursing of Canaan (Gen. 9:20-27). He is traditionally considered the ancestor of the peoples of Europe and parts of Asia. The Table of Nations (Gen. 10) lists his sons: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. In medieval European tradition, Japheth was often regarded as the progenitor of European nations. The Greek form Iapheth (Iapheth) appears in the Septuagint, and the Latin form Iafeth in the Vulgate.
Cultural Usage
Jafet is primarily used in Spanish-speaking countries, though it remains less common than the English form Japheth. The name's biblical association has given it enduring appeal among Christian communities. Related variants include Yefet in Biblical Hebrew and other translations. While not among the most popular Spanish given names, Jafet continues to be chosen for its historical and religious significance.
