Meaning & History

Jadon is a Hebrew given name of Biblical origin, appearing in the Old Testament. Its etymology is uncertain; the name may derive from the root יָדָה (yaḏa), meaning "thankful", or from דִּין (din), meaning "he will judge". Strong's Concordance glosses it as "God has heard."

Biblical Figures

The name is borne by two obscure figures in the Hebrew Bible. Jadon the Meronothite is listed in the Book of Nehemiah (3:7) as one of the builders who repaired the wall of Jerusalem under Nehemiah's leadership. The second figure—often identified with the "man of God" in 1 Kings 13:1—is a prophet of Judah who delivered a warning against King Jeroboam I's altar at Bethel. According to Flavius Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews VIII,8,5) this prophet was named Jadon; later Christian apocryphal tradition in the Lives of the Prophets calls him Joad, and rabbinic literature identifies him with Iddo.

Cultural and modern significance

Jadon remains relatively rare as a given name, but it gained some recognition through the popularity of similar-sounding names such as Jayden. It is primarily attested in English-speaking Christian contexts through Bible reading. In contemporary usage, the name Jadon has been adopted infrequently but steadily—often admired for its short, strong sound and biblical roots.
