Meaning & History

Hypomone is a Greek female name meaning "patience". It is best known as the monastic name of Saint Helena Dragaš (c. 1372 – 23 March 1450), the Empress consort of Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and mother of the last two Byzantine emperors, John VIII Palaiologos and Constantine XI Palaiologos. After the death of her husband, she became a nun and adopted the name Hypomone, which is translated into English as "Patience." She served as regent of the Byzantine Empire from the death of John VIII in 1448 until the enthronement of Constantine XI in 1449. Venerated as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church, her feast day is celebrated on May 29 or March 23. The name Hypomone is rare and primarily appears in religious or historical contexts, associated with the virtue of patience and the legacy of the Palaiologos dynasty.
