Meaning & History
Huangdi is a Chinese name meaning "yellow emperor" (from huáng "yellow" and dì "god, emperor"). It is the name of the mythical Yellow Emperor, a central figure in Chinese mythology and traditional history. According to legend, Huangdi reigned in the 27th century BCE and is credited with many foundational inventions, such as writing, the calendar, and medicine. He is considered the ancestor of the Chinese people, often called the "Yan Huang Zisun" (descendants of Yan and Huang).
The Yellow Emperor is also associated with Taoism as a cultural hero and is the subject of the Huangdi Neijing, an ancient medical text. His reign is traditionally dated to around 2697–2597 BCE by some sources, though these dates are not historically verified. Huangdi is often depicted as a wise ruler who unified tribes and established the early foundation of Chinese civilization.
Though Huangdi is rarely used as a personal given name today due to its sacred connotations, it appears in historical texts and modern contexts such as literature or film. The name is exclusively masculine and remains an iconic symbol of Chinese identity and cultural continuity.
