Etymology

Hieu is the Latin form of the Jehu, a Old Testament king of Israel. The name Jehu means "Yahweh is he" in Hebrew, derived from the elements yeho (referring to the Hebrew God) and hu (meaning "he"). This Latinized form Hieu appears in the Latin Vulgate Bible, where it bears the same etymological significance as its Hebrew origin.

Biblical Context

In the Old Testament, Jehu reigned over the northern Kingdom of Israel in the 9th century BC, coming to power by overthrowing Jehoram. He is noted for his fierce eradication of the worship of Baal, though he did not fully depart from the sins of Jeroboam. Jehu is often portrayed as a divine instrument of judgment. The name also appears for a prophet during the reign of King Baasha, who delivered Jehovah's condemnation against Baasha and his house (cf. 1 Kings 16:1-4, according to biblical accounts).

Hieu has been borne by various figures across cultures. Notably, Hieu Van Le (b. 1954) serves as the 35th governor of South Australia, a prominent Vietnamese-Australian figure. In Vietnam, Hiếu is common given name; Nguyễn Khắc Hiếu (1889-1939) was a major author under the pen name Tản Đà. The spelling Hieu may also represent a surname or given name in Vietnamese contexts, but as a first name it does appears internationally, often transcribed from earlier historical forms.
