Meaning & History

Heli 1 is the Latin form of the Hebrew name Eli 1, meaning "ascension" (from the Hebrew root ʿala, "to ascend"). In the Latin Vulgate and subsequent Latin Bibles, this name appears in the New Testament in the genealogy of Jesus according to the Gospel of Luke (Luke 3:23), where Heli is recorded as the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. It is not to be confused with the Old Testament high priest Eli, whose name is rendered as Hely or Eli in different Latin versions.

The use of Heli in English Bibles, such as the King James Version, follows the Latin tradition. While the figure of Heli is only briefly mentioned in the New Testament, the name connects to a longer Hebrew lineage through the root ʿala, suggesting themes of exaltation and spiritual ascent.

Because Heli itself is a Latin rendering, few bearers use it directly; however, through its source Eli, it shares a legacy of religious and historical figures. Eli appears in the Old Testament as the high priest and mentor of Samuel, and later became a common English given name after the Protestant Reformation, notably borne by inventor Eli Whitney.

In European onomastics, the Latin form Heli remained largely in biblical contexts, while vernacular forms like Finnish Eeli and English Ely developed separately.
