During the conflict, Gwydion personally kills King Pryderi of Dyfed. As punishment for the crime, Math transforms Gwydion and Gilfaethwy into various animals over three years.

Gwydion is also the uncle and foster father of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, whom he raises alongside Math. Together, they fashion a wife for Lleu named Blodeuwedd from flowers, and later assist Lleu after her betrayal. Beyond the Mabinogi, Gwydion appears in other medieval Welsh texts, including the Book of Taliesin, the Welsh Triads, and the Stanzas of the Graves.

Gwydion's name and stories continue to resonate in modern culture. The character's association with magic and shape-shifting has inspired various representations in literature and games, most notably in the fantasy series The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, where a version of Gwydion serves as a heroic mentor.
