Guanyu is a Chinese given name written with characters like 冠宇 (guān yǔ). The first character, 冠 (guān), means "cap, crown, headgear," and the second, 宇 (yǔ), means "house, eaves, universe." In 219, while engaged at the Battle of Fancheng, his rear was attacked by forces of the kingdom of Wu, leading to his capture and execution.

Guan Yu later became deified in Chinese folk religion as the God of War (Guandi) and a symbol of righteousness, loyalty, and integrity. Temples dedicated to him are common across China. The name Guanyu, directly associated with this iconic figure, is sometimes chosen by parents seeking to imbue their child with these martial and ethical virtues.
