Meaning & History

Gratian is a historical name derived from the Roman family name Gratianus, itself rooted in the Latin word gratus meaning "grateful". The name was borne by several significant figures in late antiquity, most notably the Roman emperor Gratian and a 4th-century saint.

Etymology

The name Gratianus was a Roman cognomen (family name) derived from gratus, meaning "grateful" or "pleasing." It followed the common pattern of forming names from adjectives. Variants in other languages include Gratien (French), Graziano (Italian), Gracjan (Polish), and Graciano (Spanish).

Historical Bearers

The most prominent bearer is Gratian (Latin: Gratianus; 18 April 359 – 25 August 383), emperor of the Western Roman Empire from 367 to 383. He was the eldest son of Valentinian I and was raised to the rank of Augustus as a child, inheriting the West after his father's death in 375. He nominally shared governance with his infant half-brother Valentinian II, while the East was ruled by his uncle Valens, later succeeded by Theodosius I. Gratian campaigned across the Rhine, defeating the Lentienses, and after Valens was killed at the Battle of Adrianople (378), Gratian elevated Theodosius to emperor of the East in 379. He was a staunch supporter of Nicene Christianity, issuing the Edict of Thessalonica (380) which declared Nicene Christianity the state religion. He was assassinated in 383 during the usurpation of Magnus Maximus.

Another important bearer is Saint Gratian (? – c. 450?), traditionally considered the first bishop of Tours in the 4th century. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
