Meaning & History

Gervásio is the Portuguese form of Gervasius, a name of debated etymology. Gervasius itself may be a Latinized form of a Germanic name whose first element derives from ger "spear". The second element is uncertain; some propose it comes from Gaulish wassos "servant", while others link it to the Greek word γεραιός (geraios) meaning "old".

The name is primarily known through Saint Gervasius, an early Christian martyr from Milan. According to tradition, his remains, along with those of his fellow martyr Protasius, were miraculously discovered in the 4th century by Saint Ambrose. The relics were translated to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Milan, where they have been venerated ever since. Saint Gervasius is commemorated on June 19th in the Catholic Church.

In the Portuguese-speaking world, Gervásio has been used as a male given name, though it is not extremely common. It shares linguistic roots with related forms in other languages, such as English Gervase, French Gervais, Spanish Gervasio, and Polish Gerwazy. The name first entered the Portuguese onomasticon through Christian veneration of the saint.
