Meaning & History

Genesio is the Italian form of Genesius, derived from the Greek word γένεσις (genesis) meaning "birth" or "origin." This name has strong Christian associations, being borne by several early saints, most notably Genesius of Rome, the patron saint of actors. Legend holds that Genesius of Rome was a pagan actor who converted to Christianity during a performance and was subsequently martyred under the Emperor Diocletian in the late 3rd century. Another early saint is Genesius of Arles, a secretary martyred in 303 or 308 under Constantine's reign. Nickeland other interpretations sometimes credit Genesius of Clermont, a late 6th-century bishop, but the actor's saint is the most widely known across Western Christianity.
