Fuxi is a foundational figure in Chinese mythology, revered as a culture hero and the first of the mythical Three Sovereigns. His name is typically composed of the characters 伏 (fú, meaning "prostrate" or "lying down") and 羲 (xī, a character that refers to the god himself). Fuxi is best known as the twin brother and husband of Nüwa, the goddess who repaired the sky and created mankind.

The etymology of Fuxi's name reflects his dual association with submission (伏) and divinity (羲). In some interpretations, the character 伏 may also relate to the concept of taming or domesticating animals, hinting at his role in teaching early humans how to hunt and cook. The second character 羲 is unique and appears almost exclusively in reference to Fuxi, emphasizing his extraordinary divine status.
