According to the legend of the Children of Lir, she was the only daughter of Lir, a member of the supernatural race Tuatha Dé Danann, and transformed into a swan by her stepmother Aoife. Together with her brothers Fiachra, Conn, and Aodh, she was cursed to wander the lakes and rivers of Ireland for 900 years, during which they preserved their human voices and the gift of song. Their eventual liberation came when they heard a church bell, which led to their salvation through the union of a prince and a princess from the north.
