Meaning & History

Fiachrae is the Old Irish form of Fiachra, a traditionally Irish masculine name. Its etymology is complex, drawing from Old Irish elements: possibly fiach meaning "raven" or fích meaning "battle", combined with meaning "king". This suggests a meaning such as "battle-king" or "raven-king", though the exact interpretation remains uncertain. The name appears in early Irish mythology and history, borne by several notable figures.

Mythological Bearer

In Irish mythology, one of the legendary figures named Fiachrae is the brother of Aed and Conn, and son of Lir, who with his sibling was transformed into a swan by his stepmother Aoife, condemned to wander for 900 years—a tale retold in The Tragedy of the Children of Lir, among the "Three Sorrows of Storytelling" in Irish lore.

Historical Prince

Another prominent bearer is the Irish prince Fiachrae, son of the high king Eochaid Mugmedón (d. 362) and his wife Mongfind. He was a pivotal figure among the Uí Néill dynasties, ancestor of the Uí Fiachrach dynasties of Connacht. According to the saga "The Violent Death of Crimthann mac Fidaig and of the Three Sons of Eochaid Muigmedón," Fiachrae fought against his brother Brión for control of Connacht. Initially defeated and captured, Fiachrae was later freed after his son Nath Í killed Brión in battle, succeeding to his holdings as champion and tax-collector for the region. Through his line descended powerful families in Connacht.

Related Names and Forms

The name Fiachrae is historically linked to several variants. In both Irish and Old Irish usage, the modern form is usually Fiachra. The name was also adopted into French as Fiacre, most famously borne by Saint Fiacre, a 7th-century Irish abbot who settled in France and became the patron saint of gardeners. His cult remains popular, and the name Fiacre is used in French in his honor.
