Euhemerus is the Latinized form of the Greek name Εὐήμερος (Euemeros), which means "good day, happy, prosperous" — derived from the elements eu meaning "good" and hemera meaning "day". This name was borne by a 4th-century BC Greek mythographer whose ideas gave rise to the philosophical concept of euhemerism.

Euhemerus (c. late 4th century BC) served at the court of Cassander, king of Macedon. His birthplace is debated, with Messina in Sicily considered the most likely location, though sources also suggest Chios or Tegea. He is best known for his work Sacred History (Hiera Anagraphe), which blended fiction, allegory, and political utopianism. In it, Euhemerus claimed that the gods of Greek mythology were originally mortal kings, heroes, or benefactors who were deified after death. This rationalizing interpretation — later named euhemerism — proposed that myths contain a kernel of historical truth, distorted over time by oral tradition.

Cultural and Religious Impact

Euhemerus's ideas were controversial in antiquity but found an early champion in the Christian writer Lactantius (c. 240–320 AD), who used the euhemerist argument to demonstrate that pagan gods, being merely human in origin, were inferior to the Christian God. However, Euhemerus was also criticized as an atheist by other ancient authors. The concept was revived during the Renaissance and has been applied to the study of mythologies worldwide.
