Meaning & History
Esperança is the Portuguese and Catalan cognate of Esperanza, meaning 'hope' in English. Both names trace their origin to the Late Latin name Sperantia, itself derived from the Latin verb spero meaning 'to hope'. Esperança and its Spanish counterpart are thus virtue names emerging from the Christian theological virtue of hope, one of the three theological virtues alongside faith and charity (1 Corinthians 13:13).
