Meaning & History

Eros is the Greek god of love and sex, whose name directly means "love" in Greek. In Greek mythology, he was a young god, the son of Aphrodite, armed with arrows that caused anyone struck to fall in love. The Romans identified him as Cupid or Amor.

Etymology and Origins

The name Eros (Ancient Greek: Ἔρως) literally means "love" or "desire." In the earliest accounts, such as Hesiod's Theogony, Eros was a primordial god, one of the first beings to emerge at creation, personifying the creative force of love. However, in later traditions, he became the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. This later depiction is more familiar in popular culture.

Mythology and Depiction

Eros is usually presented as a handsome young man or, in some appearances, as a mischievous juvenile boy. He is winged and carries his signature bow and arrows, which he uses to make both mortals and gods fall in love, often at the direction of Aphrodite. His role in myths is mostly complementary, often appearing with his mother and other love deities, acting as a catalyst for romance. The most famous exception is his own love story with Psyche, a mortal princess. According to Apuleius's The Golden Ass, Eros fell in love with Psyche, married her, but forbade her to look at him. After a series of trials imposed by Aphrodite, Psyche was reunited with Eros and became a goddess.

Cultural Significance

As a first name, Eros is used especially in Italian and Greek contexts, though it remains uncommon outside mythology references. It carries a powerful connotation of passionate love. The name's association with the god also gives it elements of playfulness and mischief slightly deeper than its direct meaning.
