Origin and Meaning

Eloy is the Spanish form of Eligius, a Late Latin name derived from the Latin verb eligo meaning "to choose." Eligius was borne by a 7th-century Christian saint and bishop, Saint Eligius (also known as Eloy), who served as the bishop of Noyon-Tournai in what is now France. He became the patron saint of metalworkers, goldsmiths, and coin collectors, reflecting his legendary skill as a metalsmith.
