Meaning & History

Dorothée is the French form of Dorothea, a feminine name ultimately derived from the Greek name Δωρόθεος (Dorotheos), meaning "gift of god", from δῶρον (doron) "gift" and θεός (theos) "god". The same two elements appear in reversed order in the name Theodore.

The name was borne by several early saints, most notably the 4th-century martyr Dorothea of Caesarea, as well as the 14th-century Saint Dorothea of Montau, patron saint of Prussia. In French, Dorothée emerged as the native adaptation of the Greek original, gaining popularity as a given name in the francophone world.

Notable Bearer

A prominent modern bearer is Frédérique Hoschedé (born 14 July 1953), widely known by her stage name Dorothée. A French singer and television presenter, she began her career as a continuity announcer on Antenne 2 and later hosted children's programmes such as Récré A2 and the iconic Club Dorothée (1987–1997). Her shows featured Japanese anime like Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya, which, despite controversy over violent content, significantly popularized the genre in France. Dorothée also enjoyed a prolific recording career, releasing albums for children annually between 1980 and 1996, along with traditional French songs.
