Demeter is the Greek goddess of agriculture, grain, and the harvest. Her name is typically interpreted as meaning "earth mother," derived from the Greek elements da (earth) and meter (mother). As one of the twelve Olympian deities, she was the daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, and the sister of Zeus, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. With Zeus, she conceived her beloved daughter Persephone.
Mythological Significance
Demeter's mythology is centered around the abduction of Persephone by Hades, lord of the underworld. Grief-stricken, Demeter neglected her duties, causing the earth to become barren. Zeus eventually intervened, brokering a deal that allowed Persephone to spend part of the year with her mother and the rest in the underworld, thus explaining the cycle of the seasons. This myth was central to the Eleusinian Mysteries, secret religious rites held at Eleusis that promised initiates a blessed afterlife.

Demeter's name has endured in various forms. The modern Greek equivalent is Dimitra, while Demetra appears in Romanian and other languages. Diminutive forms such as Demi and Dimi are also used as independent given names.
