Meaning & History
Etymology
Daša is a Slovene feminine diminutive of Danijela and other names beginning with Da. Danijela is the Slovene form of Daniela, the feminine version of Daniel. The root name Daniel is ultimately derived from the Hebrew name Daniyyel, meaning "God is my judge," from the elements din ("to judge") and ʾel ("God").
Cultural Significance
In Slovene, diminutives like Daša are formed by shortening names and adding the suffix -ša. Because it is a modern diminutive for Danijela and not for other established names like Anja or Maja, Daša is a specifically Sofie variation of Danijelan suffix. It functions similarly to Italian Lucina or Slovak Dana. It also couples seamlessly newer derivatives common among South Slavic lands. What young users like about Daša is its musicality and foreign direct clarity. While larger trend, Dina gave way from local regional preference within Yugoslavia.
