Darijus is a Lithuanian variant of the name Darius. It is used predominantly in Lithuania, where it reflects both the ancient Persian heritage of the name and a local patriotic association with the Lithuanian-American aviator Steponas Darius.
Etymology
The name Darius is the Latin form of Greek Δαρεῖος (Dareios), which itself derives from the Old Persian name 𐎭𐎠𐎼𐎹𐎢𐏁 (Darayauš), a shortened form of 𐎭𐎠𐎼𐎹𐎺𐎢𐏁 (Darayavauš). The meaning is “possessing goodness,” from the elements daraya (“to hold, to possess”) and vau (“good”). The name originally referred to three kings of the Achaemenid Empire, notably Darius the Great (Darius I), who expanded the Persian Empire to its greatest territorial extent before his invasion of Greece was halted at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE.
Usage in Lithuania
In Lithuania, the form Darijus (sometimes spelled Darius) gained prominence partly as a tribute to the pilot Steponas Darius (born Steponas Darašius, 1896–1933). Along with his American-Lithuanian co-pilot Stasys Girėnas, Darius attempted a nonstop transatlantic flight from New York to Lithuania in 1933. The flight, known as the flight of the Lituanica, ended tragically in a crash in Germany, but made Darius a national hero. Many Lithuanian boys were named in his honor in the 20th century.
Distribution and Forms
Darijus is essentially unique to Lithuania. Related forms include Darijo (Croatian), Dario (Italian), Dareios (Old Persian), and the original form in Latin script. The name saw revived international popularity from the mid-20th century, particularly in African-American communities in the United States, but the Lithuanian version remains a distinct local adaptation.
