Damán is the Old Irish form of Damhán, an Irish name meaning "little calf, fawn." The name is derived from the Old Irish element dam, meaning "ox" or "deer," combined with a diminutive suffix. In early Irish tradition, this name was borne by a saint, a brother of Saint Abbán, though details of his life are scant.

With the decline of Old Irish nomenclature after the Norman invasion, Damán fell out of usage and is now primarily a historical or revivalist name. Its feminine counterpart, Damnat, occasionally appears in modern Irish baby name lists.
