Meaning & History

Czcibor is an archaic Ctibor.

Etymology

The name derives from the Slavic elements čĭstĭ "honour" and borti "battle", thus meaning "honourable battle" or "one who fights with honour". The Polish form Czcibor developed from the earlier Old Slavic Čĭstiborŭ. A variant form, also Polish, is Cibor.

Notable Bearer

The most famous bearer of the name is Czcibor (died after 972), a member of the Piast dynasty and the younger brother of Mieszko I, the first Christian ruler of Poland. According to medieval chronicles, particularly the works of Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg, Czcibor participated in the decisive Battle of Cedynia in 972, where Polish forces defeated the Saxon margrave Odo I. Thietmar notably mentions Czcibor by his Latinized name, Cidebur, making him the only known Piast of that era besides Mieszko I to be recorded directly. Some historians speculate that Czcibor may have served as governor of the newly conquered Pomeranian lands after 967.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Though rare in modern times, Czcibor holds an important place in Polish history due to its association with the early Piast state and the legendary battle that helped secure Polish sovereignty over the Oder region. The name reflects the strong martial and ethical values embedded in early Slavic naming traditions—honour and valour in combat.

Related Names

Besides the Polish form Czcibor, the name appears in other Slavic languages: Czech Ctibor and Old Slavic Čĭstiborŭ. The Polish variant Cibor is also used.
