Meaning & History

Crisanto is the Spanish form of Chrysanthos, a name of Greek origin meaning "golden flower," derived from chryseos (golden) and anthos (flower). The name Chrysanthos was borne by a semi-legendary 3rd-century Egyptian saint, giving Crisanto a subtle Christian reverence though the Saint Chrysanthos is more widely venerated in the Eastern Orthodox tradition rather than in Spanish-speaking Catholicism.

Despite its classical roots, Crisanto is not a common name in Spain or Latin America today, often perceived as traditional or somewhat old-fashioned. A notable bearer of the name in modern times is the Filipino professional basketball player Crisanto "Jumbo" Bolado (1969–2017), who played in the Philippine Basketball Association and was known for his height and successful career with multiple championship teams.

Forms and Variants

The root name Chrysanthos has several forms in other languages. In Italian, it appears as Crisanto; in Greek, it is Χρύσανθος (Chrysanthos); and in Russian, it becomes Khrisanf (Хрисанф). The Spanish usage is the subject of this article.
