Meaning & History

Clotilde is a female given name of French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish usage. It is the French form of Chrodechildis, the Latinized version of a Frankish name composed of the hruod element meaning "fame, glory" and hilt meaning "battle". The name is thus interpreted as "famous battle" or "glorious battle", a fitting moniker for a warrior queen.

Historical and Religious Significance

Saint Clotilde (c. 474 – 3 June 545) was a queen consort of the Franks and the wife of King Clovis I. Her original name was recorded in Latin sources as Chrodechildis or Chrotchildis. According to the Wikipedia biographical sketch, Clotilde played a pivotal role in the conversion of Clovis to Christianity. She was a Catholic princess of Burgundy, and her marriage to the Frankish king was, from the 6th century onward, "made the theme of epic narratives, in which the original facts were materially altered."

Clotilde's efforts to convert the king were ultimately successful, and Clovis was baptized around 496. Her influence meant that the Franks embraced Catholicism rather than the Arian Christianity common among the Germanic tribes. She has since been venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, and her feast day is celebrated on June 3. She is the patron saint of the lame in Normandy and the patron saint of Les Andelys, and has been invoked against sudden death and abusive husbands. The name was also borne by other members of the Merovingian royal family.

Linguistic Variants and Confusion

Several variant forms exist across languages: Clothilde in French, Clotilda in English, Klothilde in German, Klotild in Hungarian, Klotylda in Polish, and Clothildis in Germanic languages. In the Middle Ages, the name was often confused with Chlodechilda, where the first element is hlut meaning "famous, loud". This confusion explains the many spelling variations in early records.
