Meaning & History

Chlodomer is a Frankish name derived from the Germanic elements hlut meaning "famous, loud" and mari meaning "famous". Thus, the name essentially conveys double emphasis on fame. This name is a variant in the Germanic namings tradition that often combined such elements to express noble qualities essential for a warrior king.

Etymology

The name Chlodomer is linguistically related to the more widely known Clovis, which is the Latinized form of the name Hludwig (cf. Ludwig). While Clovis achieved fame as the 5th-century founder of the united Franks, Chlodomer uses the alternative second element mari ("famous") instead of wig ("war"), present in Hludwig. Hence Chlodomer paraphrases as "loud/famous famousness"

Historical significance

The most notable bearer was Chlodomer (c. 495–524), a Frankish king of the Merovingian dynasty. After the death of his father Clovis in 511, the Frankish kingdom was divided among Chlodomer and his three brothers: Theuderic I, Childebert I, and Chlothar I. Chlodomer thus gained Orléans as his capital, thus initiating a period when four co-existing Frankish kings oversaw the land. Moreover, Chlodomer assumed the title King of the Franks, with jurisdiction extending to Tours, Poitiers, and Orléans. He took part with his brothers in a Burgundian war (523–524), provoking a further rift by leading the murder of Sigismund of Burgundy. According to accounts by Gregory of Tours, he then conquered Burgundy, but was killed at the Battle of Vézeronce in 524 during a renewed conflict. With his death the kingdom was once again partitioned among his remaining brothers. One of his three sons by Guntheuc (Theodebald, Gunthar, Clodoald) each later retained any property taken by their father. Clodoald eventually retired to a monastery and was later acknowledged as Saint Cloud, thereby joining both history and veneration.

In Spanish-speaking Latin America, the variant form Chlodomiro (compare also Clodomiro) survives as a given name.
