Meaning & History
Cadell is an old Welsh personal name derived from Cadell or Cadel, itself originating from Old Welsh Catell. The name is composed of the Brittonic element cat meaning "battle" and a diminutive suffix, giving it the sense of "little battle" or "battle-kin." This name was borne by two early kings of the Kingdom of Powys in Wales, lending it historical significance in early medieval Welsh history.
In etymology, Cadell is also thought to derive from the Latin name Catullus, which itself is a diminutive of Catus meaning "clever" or "sharp." As a given name, Cadell appears in the lineage of Welsh royalty: Cadell Ddyrnllwg (c. 447–460) is considered the founder of the royal house of Powys, and a later Cadell ap Brochfael (c. 773–808) also ruled the kingdom. Additionally, several other prominent medieval figures bore the name, including Cadell ap Gruffydd (Prince of Deheubarth, 1143–1153) and Cadell ap Rhodri (Prince of Seisyllwg, 854–909).
In modern times, the name has gained some recognition through Australian cyclist Cadel Evans (born 1977), winner of the 2011 Tour de France. While rarely seen in the present day, Cadell remains an emblem of Welsh heritage and medieval history.
Related forms include Catell, the Old Welsh variant, and Cadoc, which shares the same root meaning "battle." There is also an Old Irish equivalent Cathán. As a surname, Cadell derives from the Welsh patronymic ap Cadell, meaning "son of Cadell." Notable bearers of the surname include explorer Francis Cadell (1822–1879), Scottish-born explorer of Australia, and British novelist Elizabeth Cadell (1903–1989).
