Meaning & History

Briege is an Irish feminine given name, representing an Anglicized form of Bríd. Bríd itself is the modern Irish spelling of Brighid, which is a newer form of the Old Irish name Brigit. This name ultimately derives from the Celtic word *Brigantī, meaning "the exalted one."

Etymology & Mythology

In Irish mythology, Brigit was the name of the goddess of fire, poetry, and wisdom, daughter of the Dagda, the chief god. The name's association with divine exaltation reflects the exalted status of the goddess in Celtic tradition. The Christian Saint Brigid of Kildare, who lived in the 5th century, further popularized the name. She founded a monastery at Kildare and is one of Ireland's three patron saints. Due to her sanctity, the name was considered too sacred for ordinary use and only came into general circulation in Ireland during the 17th century.

Variant Forms

The Anglicization process produced several versions, including Breda, Bride, Bridget, and the diminutive Bridie. Outside Ireland, the name developed into forms such as Birgitta in Sweden, where it was borne by the 14th-century Saint Bridget of Sweden, patron saint of Europe; Birgit; Berit; Birgitte in Norwegian; Brigita in Slovene; and Gita in Latvian.
