Meaning & History

Bonaventure is a French and English form of Bonaventura. As a French name, it is most common in Francophone Africa, while in English it is primarily used in reference to the saint

Etymology

The Italian name Bonaventura means "good fortune" (from Latin bonus "good" and venturas "things that will come"). It was given as a religious name, originating from the epithet of the 13th-century Franciscan theologian.

Saint Bonaventure

The most notable bearer is Saint Bonaventure (born Giovanni di Fidanza, 1221–1274), an Italian Scholastic theologian and philosopher, the seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, and a Doctor of the Church known as the "Seraphic Doctor". His feast day is 15 July. He was canonized in 1482 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1588.

Cultural Significance

The name remains in use in Catholic contexts, particularly in mission regions such as Africa. Place names (e.g., Bonaventure, Quebec) and numerous educational institutions bear his name.
