Bleda

Bleda was a Hunnic ruler, the brother of Attila. While Attila became the more famous figure, Bleda initially co-ruled the Hunnic Empire with his brother after succeeding their uncle Rugila in the mid-5th century. His reign lasted for approximately eleven years, until his death around 445. The circumstances of his death are uncertain, but the 6th-century historian Jordanes speculated that Attila had him murdered during a hunting trip.

Etymology

Bleda's name appears in various forms in ancient sources: Greek writers recorded it as Βλήδας (Bledas) or Βλέδας (Bledas), while the Chronicon Paschale gives Βλίδας (Blidas). Latin texts refer to him simply as Bleda. The name's origin is debated. The meaning provided suggests a possible Turkic root meaning "wise," but other theories propose a Gothic origin or that it was a Gothicized form of a Hunnic name. Scholars such as Otto Maenchen-Helfen considered the name Germanic or Germanized, possibly a short form of compounds like Bladardus or Blatgildus. Denis Sinor, on the other hand, noted that the name begins with a consonant cluster, hinting at its potential Hunnic or non-Germanic roots. Bleda's brother Attila's name, by contrast, is traditionally linked to a Gothic derivation meaning "little father."

Notable Historical Account

Few details survive about Bleda's personality or governance. One vivid anecdote involves his acquisition of a Moorish dwarf named Zerco after the great Hun campaign of 441. Bleda found Zerco entertaining and commissioned a suit of armor for him so the dwarf could accompany him on military campaigns—a story that offers a rare glimpse into the daily life and character of the Hunnic court.
