Belenus is the Latinized form of the Gaulish names Belenos or Belinos, and it was the name of an ancient Celtic god of healing, often equated with the Roman god Apollo through the process of interpretatio romana. The etymology of the name is debated: it may derive from the Indo-European root *bhel- meaning "bright, brilliant," or from *bel- meaning "strong."
