Meaning & History

Ayrton ( AIR-tən) is a given name and surname, most notably associated with Brazilian racecar driver Ayrton Senna (1960–1994). It is a variant of Aírton, which itself may derive from the English village name Airton – meaning "settlement on the river Aire" – or from the surname Ayrton that originates there. The name's emergence as a given name in Brazil is not entirely clear, but it appears on Brazilian popularity charts from the 1930s onward.

Although the name's literal meaning ties to a small English settlement, its cultural weight today comes overwhelmingly from Ayrton Senna. A three-time Formula One World Champion, Senna is regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the sport's history. His tragic death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix remains a defining moment in motorsport. The name Ayrton is common in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking countries, often chosen as a tribute to Senna or simply as a modern-sounding first name.
