Meaning & History
Astraia is the original Greek form of the name Astraea, the Romanized Latin version. Derived from the Greek word astēr (aster) meaning "star", Astraia appears in Greek mythology as the goddess of justice and innocence. According to myth, Astraia lived among humans during the Golden Age, but as wickedness spread, she abandoned the earth and was placed among the stars as the constellation Virgo. The name thus carries connotations of purity, righteousness, and celestial light.
Usage and related forms
Astraia, while less common than its Latinized counterpart, has been used in modern times, particularly in Greece and among those seeking mythological names. Related forms include the English Aster and Astra, both of which share the same "star" root.
