Meaning & History

Aridai is a name of uncertain meaning, possibly of Persian origin. In the Old Testament, specifically in the Book of Esther (9:9), Aridai is listed as one of the ten sons of Haman, the Persian vizier who plotted to annihilate the Jewish people. According to the narrative, the sons are killed by the Jews in Susa after Haman's execution on the gallows.

Etymology

The name's etymology is obscure. Some scholars suggest it may derive from a Persian word, but no definitive explanation exists. As a biblical name, it has no known extra-biblical attestations and is generally considered a rare, non-lexical name in the Hebrew Bible.

Cultural Significance

Aridai is part of the story of Purim, which celebrates the deliverance of the Jews from Haman's plot. Although many men named after Esther's heroic cousin Mordecai exist, names of Haman's sons (like Aridai) are generally avoided due to their negative associations; however, they appear in biblical name lists and occasionally inspire scholarly or religious interest.

Distribution

Aridai is extremely rare as a given name. It appears almost exclusively in religious or academic contexts referencing the biblical passage, and is virtually unused in modern naming conventions. Its usage is limited to English Bible backgrounds as a learned or traditional name.
