Meaning & History

Arash is a heroic figure of Iranian mythology and a popular given name in Persian-speaking cultures. The name is derived from Avestan Ərəxša, of uncertain meaning, though it may be related to a root meaning "bear". According to Iranian legend, Arash was an archer who, after a devastating war between Iran and Turan, was instructed by the Turanians to shoot an arrow whose landing point would determine the new border between the two lands. Arash climbed a mountain, put his own life force into the shot, and launched his arrow with such supernatural strength that it flew for several hours, eventually landing on the banks of the Oxus River (modern Amu Darya), hundreds of miles away, restoring vast territories to Iran. The story is celebrated annually on Tirgan, a festival honoring the archer's sacrifice.

In Persian mythology, Arash represents selflessness, valor, and devotion to the homeland. The tale appears in various classical sources, including the works of the 11th-century scholar Al-Biruni, who mistakenly considered the name to be the origin of 'Arshak'—related to the Parthian dynasty of Arsacids. In reality, the Arsakid name likely derives from 'Ardashir', reflecting a claim of descent from Artaxerxes II. Among notable bearers, Arash Labaf (born 1977) is an Iranian singer, musician, and former Olympic fighter pilot who is well known for his pop music hits. Arash has variants such as Arashin, aligned local forms including Arax, and other related names: Eresh, Arazon. Names in the medieval Islamic period also give association with Persian archers and nobility, particularly among dynasties of Khorsaanand western China.
