Meaning & History

Aquilina is a feminine given name with Latin origins, ultimately derived from the Roman cognomen Aquila, meaning "eagle." It is the feminine form of Aquilinus, a Roman cognomen that also traces back to Aquila. The name is associated with Christian heritage, specifically Saints Aquilina and Aquilinus.

History and Martyrdom

Aquilina is most famously linked to Saint Aquilina, a young martyr from Byblos (in present-day Lebanon) who lived around 281–293 AD during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. According to hagiographic sources, Aquilina was only twelve years old when she was persecuted for her Christian faith. Raised by pious parents, she was catechized by Evthalios, the Bishop of Byblos. She was accused of converting a pagan friend to Christianity and was brought before Governor Volusian. Refusing to renounce her faith, she endured torture and eventually was beheaded. Her feast day is celebrated on June 13 in the Eastern Orthodox Church and July 23 in the Roman Catholic Church.

Etymology and Variants

The name follows the Latin feminine suffix -ina, creating a form that means "little eagle" or "eagle-like." The root name Aquila appears in the New Testament as the name of a Jewish Christian tentmaker who accompanied Saint Paul. In Russian, the name appears as Akilina or Akulina, adapting the Latin form through Eastern Orthodox traditions.

Cultural Significance

While Aquilina is not common in modern usage, it remains in occasional use, especially in Spanish-speaking and Roman Catholic communities. Its rarity adds to its distinctiveness, evoking images of early Christian martyrs and Roman heritage.
