Meaning & History
Apolonija is a feminine given name used in Slovenian, Lithuanian, and Latvian, corresponding to the more widely known Apollonia. The name ultimately derives from the ancient Greek personal name Apollonios, which in turn is rooted in the name of the Greek god Apollo. Saint Apollonia was a 3rd-century Christian martyr from Alexandria who had her teeth knocked out, making her the patron saint of dentists and dental problems. Through the spread of Christianity, the name Apollonia adopted forms in many languages; Apolonija is the Baltic and South Slavic adaptation.
Etymology
The etymology traces back through Apollonia to Apollonios, a Greek personal name meaning "of Apollo" or "consecrated to Apollo." The god Apollo was a major deity in Greek mythology, associated with prophecy, music, arts, healing, and the sun. His own name is pre-Greek and of unclear origin—possibly from Indo-European *apelo- "strength," or the Anatolian Appaliunas "father lion" or "father light." Later Greeks linked it to the verb ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi) meaning "to destroy," much as Christian association gave the form Apolonija, which also may reflect use among Slavic and Baltic peoples who also venerate of Saint Apollonia of Alexandria.Notable Bearers
While not widely common outside of Slovenia, Lithuania, and Latvia, women named Apolonija most likely date from the Christianization of the Baltics (13th–15th centuries) and have enjoyed both given-name and register dimension forms. In Slovene, pet forms like Polona and Polonca derived names that are also relatively frequent. Notable historical bearers are not common in larger biographical sources, but as a consistent form.Cultural Distribution
