Meaning & History

Anelia is a Bulgarian female given name, most commonly recognized as the stage name of singer Aneliya Georgieva Atanasova. It is an alternate transcription of Bulgarian Анелия (Aneliya).

Etymology and Origins

Anelia is derived from Aneliya, a diminutive form of Anna. Anna itself comes from Hannah, a Hebrew name meaning "favor" or "grace," appearing in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Anna is a prophetess who recognizes Jesus as the Messiah. The name gained widespread use in the Byzantine Empire and later among Western Christians due to veneration of Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary.

Cultural Significance

In Bulgaria, Anelia is strongly associated with the pop-folk singer Anelia (born 1 July 1982). Her music career began with the single "Погледни ме в очите" in 2002, and she achieved 23 chart-topping singles. In 2012, she won the Artist of the Year award from Planeta TV. While not biblical in its immediate form, Anelia shares roots with a name used by royalty, such as Saint Anna, and literary figures, like the tragic heroine Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

Related Forms

Other Bulgarian variants include Aneliya and Anka, while the diminutive Neli is common. Across other cultures, related names are Anna (Ukrainian), Ana (Tongan), and Hannah (Hebrew).
