Meaning & History
Etymology and Biblical Origin
Amnon is a Hebrew name meaning "faithful". In the Old Testament, he appears as a tragic figure: the eldest son of King David and his wife Ahinoam of Jezreel. Amnon was initially the heir to the throne of Israel, but his notorious crime and violent death altered the course of David's dynasty.
Biblical Narrative
Amnon's story is recounted in 2 Samuel 13. Despite the biblical prohibition against sexual relations between half-siblings (Leviticus 18:11), Amnon conspired with his cousin Jonadab to lure his half-sister Tamar into his chambers under the pretense of illness and then raped her. After the assault, he feigned revulsion and expelled her publicly, deepening the disgrace. Tamar's full brother Absalom harbored a simmering rage, and two years later, at a sheep-shearing feast, Absalom ordered his servants to kill Amnon, thus exacting vengeance and setting off a chain of rebellion.
Cultural and Religious Significance
Among David's many sons (listed in 1 Chronicles 3:1–9, including Daniah, Shammua, etc.), Amnon stands out for his destructive lust and the pivotal role his actions played in the disintegration of David's family. His name, meaning "faithful," stands in bitter contrast to his faithless betrayal of Tamar and his own princely duty. Jewish commentary often amplifies this irony, and later figures like Jonathan or other namesakes serve as minor bearers. The name remained rare in Western usage but appears in modern revivals.
Linguistic and Variant Forms
Through Greek (Ἀμνών, Amnōn) and English Bibles, the form Amnon persisted unchanged. Although David and Tamar remain far more common names, Amnon retains currency particularly among Jewish and Christian families who value its deep biblical resonance even as the narrative fact accords a moral lesson on faithfulness and hubris.
